Gardening and Environmental Awareness

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." -Audrey Hepburn

It is the aim of CCPLongmont to do our part to help the world make the shift away from an oil economy. To that end, we are focused on gardening, soil regeneration, and the return of healthy ecosystems, both local as in “my backyard” and on a grand scale as in “In what ways do agricultural practices need to change?”

We have two locations where we experiment and learn about growing both food and ornamentals using sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

Our Midtown Community Garden is a set of urban lots (approximately ¾ of an acre in total) located centrally in Longmont. We are in the process of creating a “food forest” that is pleasing to the eye and welcoming to neighborhood visitors. While still very much in the initial stages of construction, our aim is to develop a space where one is able to gain inspiration, knowledge and experience in how to design and plant an urban space that is in harmony with the local climate and provides food for local residents. It is also intended as a place where friends meet to simply sit, visit, enjoy and relax.

The second location is a leased (10 acre) property in the Berthoud area (9 miles north of the first location). This location is dedicated to broadening and expanding our knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices relative to a small farm.

Health and Wellness

“Breathing is our participation with the cosmic dance. When our breath is in harmony, cosmos nourishes us in every sense.”
― Amit Ray, Beautify your Breath

Addressing the needs of one’s body, mind and spirit is the goal of our health and wellness activities. Here at CCPLongmont we believe that the first step towards tackling and accomplishing larger societal goals begins with getting the blood flowing with a group of friends. Whether one is meeting a friend in one of our gardens, playing a board game or participating in one of our classes or support groups, there are lots of opportunities to enhance one’s physical and emotional well-being.

Animal Rescue & Dog Training

“I'll believe it if I see it" for dogs translates to "I'll believe it if I smell it." So don't bother yelling at them; it's the energy and scent they pay attention to, not your words.” -- Cesar Millan

CCPLongmont strives for the ideal and most ancient of relationships with animals; that of partnership. We believe that with a purposeful match, humans rescue animals and animals rescue humans. We rescue puppies and kittens with a potential home in mind and continue to provide the support necessary for a win-win partnership to develop and thrive.

In our dog training classes, we focus on helping participants develop a knowledge of the difference in communication style between humans and dogs in order to enhance the relationship. By better understanding how they differ, one can more effectively teach dogs basic commands.

Civic Engagement and Journalism

“Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.”
-Henry Anatole Grunwald

As the world is changing, it is essential for us to bear witness and be the eyes and ears of our community. Being engaged civically propels us forward, holds power to account, and considers the long term impacts of the decisions that are made. CCPLongmont is developing a non-partisan program that encourages participation in civic activities (e. g. city council meetings, transportation design meetings) and gives the participant an opportunity to report on those events

Mentoring & Support groups

“Students must have initiative; they should not be mere imitators. They must learn to think and act for themselves – and be free.” – Cesar Chavez

If one observes nature, one understands that true strength lies in diversity. What applies to the plant and animal world is also true of humans. We are at our best when we recognize that talents come in all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities. We at CCPLongmont believe in learning from and helping each other across skill sets and mindsets. With exposure to people of differing talents, interest and life experiences, there is more opportunity to learn and grow.

Accessible Transportation

“The ADA was a wonderful achievement. But it was only a tiny tip of the iceberg. You can pass a law, but until you change society’s attitudes that law won’t mean much.” -Denise Sherrer Jacobson, Writer and Disability Educator

Freedom of movement is essential to independence. We are living in a rapidly changing world and one of the goals of CCPLongmont is to “play our part” in understanding the complexities as well as challenges related to the issues of transportation. We want to help find solutions and take the actions necessary to address two great needs 1) ensure the ability of one to easily get from one place to another and 2) change from a gasoline powered mode of transportation to something more sustainable.
